The President of the Xunta, Alfonso Rueda, has championed Galicia’s “potential” to develop offshore wind energy, especially floating wind, guaranteeing “full compatibility” with fishing and shellfishing.
As reported by the Galician Government in a press release, the regional leader, accompanied by the Minister of Economy and Industry, María Jesús Lorenzana, held a meeting with the President and Chief Executive Officer of Grupo Amper, Pedro Morenés and Enrique López.
During the meeting, Rueda conveyed the Xunta’s “commitment” to the production of renewable energy and decarbonization, given the geographical, meteorological, oceanographic, and industrial factors of the region.
In this regard, the Galician regional leader expressed his Government’s intention to be among the first bidders in the national call that will be launched to install offshore wind farms.
INTERNATIONAL ALLIANCES
Rueda also held a meeting this week with the Dutch Ambassador to Spain, Roel Nieuwenkamp, during which they discussed possible alliances between both territories in areas such as industry and tourism.
At the meeting, the regional president highlighted that the region has a competitive ecosystem in sectors such as the automotive industry, renewable energies, biotechnology, and the maritime economy.
He also stressed the “importance” of strengthening contacts between companies, ports, universities, and technology centres, among others.
Along these lines, the opportunity presented by the Xacobeo 2027 was also noted as a means of continuing to boost tourism to Galicia, which is generating “growing interest” in the Netherlands. In fact, in 2025, 6,745 Compostelan certificates were awarded to Dutch pilgrims, 3% more than in 2024.
